Fishing in Alaska
Juneau and Sitka, Alaska

Juneau Sport Fishing
Fishing is a passion that stirs mens (and womens!) souls in Juneau. Residents plan their schedules around the tides and salmon runs to be sure to get the most fish for their freezers or smokers. Fortunately for visitors, one doesn't have to be quite so meticulously organized in order to catch salmon or halibut.
Dozens of long-time Alaskans operate charter-fishing boats in Juneau. These well-maintained boats are Coast Guard inspected and operated by Coast Guard licensed skippers. Most charter boats carry no more than four fishers at a time, to assure lots of rod time for each passenger, and charters can be for either half or a full day.
State of Alaska fishing licenses are required, but you can purchase them from your charter boat captain or at major retail outlets. At the end of your trip, when you're trying to figure out what to do with your catch, consider dropping off your fish at one of Juneau's meat packers where they will process your fish then ship it to you once you return home.
There are also local companies who can take you on guided fly-fishing trips, either in a skiff, on shore or by hopping a float-plane to a remote river or lake.
Regardless of the tackle you use, or whether you fish from shore or a boat, your fishing experience in Juneau will satisfy your desires.
Sitka Sports Fishing
In a state where fishing is legendary, Sitka is a paradise! The salmon are among the biggest in the world. The halibut frequently weigh over 100 pounds. Often the only complaint a fisherman has is a sore wrist from reeling in too many fish (if there is such a thing!). The best fishing is usually when one of the salmon runs is peaking - one of which is during Sitka's salmon derby that takes place every year on Memorial Day weekend and the first weekend in June.Sitka has some of the finest King salmon fishing in the world! Due to Sitka's location, most of the fishing grounds are located in the ocean. This ocean fishing makes for unequaled daily consistency. Huge schools of hungry king salmon gather at these ocean feeding grounds - hook-ups can be fast and furious! The Kings range from 15-60 lbs.
Coho fishing in Sitka can be spectacular! These acrobatic, top water fish can prove to be tackle testers on ultra light gear. Fishing in the ocean provides consistency and action that most are looking for. Multi fish hookups are more common than not. The Silvers range from 8 to 20 pounds.
